A sailor if rousted out of his rack in the middle of the night with the shout, "All hands on deck", might find himself in pitch darkness and in the midst of a howling  gale.  He must know when he's pulling a belaying pin out of its socket exactly where the rope thereby released is attached on the other end.  For certain, it is no sailor who is worthy his salt but also knows the ropes.
